IPA STS Converter Station Renewal Project

IPA STS Converter Station Renewal Project

Strengthening the Power Grid Between Utah and Southern California

A major transmission corridor connecting Utah to the greater Los Angeles area is being upgraded to enhance energy reliability, boost operational efficiency, and ensure consistent power delivery to communities across the region.

Managed by the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA), this vital infrastructure will support growing electricity needs while advancing the transition to cleaner energy solutions.

Modernization in Progress

Hitachi Energy is set to install two advanced high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations, replacing the original units commissioned in 1986. These new stations will be constructed alongside the current system, allowing uninterrupted power flow and minimizing service disruptions during the upgrade.

Current Capabilities

The Intermountain Power Project (IPP) currently transmits up to 2,400 MW of electricity across a 785-kilometer (488-mile) route from Delta, Utah to Adelanto, California—serving as a backbone for regional energy distribution.
